This weekend immersive workshop introduces students to the foundational techniques of acrylic painting, with a focus on layering and expressive brushwork. Students will explore how to build up their paintings through transparent and opaque layers, experimenting with texture and mark-making to create dynamic and personal works of art.

Drawing and mark making is the foundation for all of the visual arts. In this class, students will explore essential topics, including materials, line quality, value, form, light & shadow, and measuring techniques. Whether you’re new to drawing or have some experience, this class offers a strong foundation to build upon for drawing, painting, and even sculpture. Over the course of the program, students will complete 4–5 drawings.

This class focuses on the classical approach to painting the human figure in oil, working directly from the live nude model. Students will study proportion, anatomy, and the construction of form through careful observation, beginning with block-ins and value organization before moving into color relationships and flesh tones. Emphasis will be placed on understanding light, creating a sense of volume, and developing a strong, cohesive composition. Instruction will include demonstrations and guidance on both direct and indirect painting techniques.

This class provides an introduction to the core fundamentals of landscape painting. Students will learn how to arrange effective compositions, gain a deep understanding of light and atmosphere, and mix colors to create depth, balance, and harmony in their paintings.
Working from reference and master copies, students will complete 2–3 small paintings, gaining a solid foundation in the principles of landscape painting.

Weekend Immersive at Frederik Meijer Gardens

In this field-based illustration course, students will travel to Frederik Meijer Gardens to draw and paint from their large collection of Tropical & Carnivorous plants. Led by artist Madison Memering, the class will focus on observational drawing, watercolor techniques, and pen and ink practices. This class is designed for nature loving artists along with curious beginners. We invites you to slow down, observe closely, and develop your skills while considering the small things that make up the natural world around us.

While exploring the beautiful interiors of Grand Rapids heritage churches, mansions, and coffee houses, students will learn how to draw and paint interiors in perspective. This class takes students to a number of locations, and provides many subjects to choose from. Students are welcome to take a short lunch break or pack a lunch for the afternoon.

In this two-day immersive class, students will explore the luminous and intricate tradition of 19th-century faerie painting. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Arthur Rackham and John William Waterhouse, students will work to create 1-2 drawings and/or paintings that fuse myth, folklore, and poetry.

This class offers a focused exploration of color and pigment interactions in oil painting, with an emphasis on learning to quickly and accurately match colors from life and reference. Students will begin with a limited set of colors, practicing how to identify hue, value, and chroma, while slowly introducing more pigments to their palette.
This is a single weekend crash-course on learning how to mix with confidence, create cleaner mixtures, and make intentional choices in your painting process.
